Services

Have a manuscript to edit? Congratulations! How can I help?

Below you will find a basic outline of the developmental services I offer. At the bottom of the page you will find my enquiry-form and contact information. I understand that every author has their own process, so I try to keep fairly flexible in the way I structure my services. If your process doesn’t quite fit any of the services listed below, or you had a hybrid-edit in mind, please contact me for a customised offer.

Prices shown in USD, charged at either flat rate or per 1000 words.

Outline Assessment

Let’s make sure you’re off to a great start.

I will assess your novel outline to make sure it includes every structural component your finished product will need, like a great spine and a compelling narrative. I will also help you fill in any information missing.

What to expect
A marked up outline ready for you to start writing your novel. FLAT RATE $100

Writing Coach (Beta Read)

Not sure where to begin, how to continue, or where to go next? A Writing Coach is a good place to start.

I will read your manuscript, in its finished or unfinished form, and help you come up with a plan for moving forward. I will identify up to 3 areas of focus for your next revision and answer any questions you may have about how to proceed. If you already know what areas you need help with (underwriting, overwriting, pace, conflict, premise) I can mark up your manuscript to help you identify exactly where changes need to be made.

What to expect
A short report outlining up to 3 areas of focus for your next revision. $3/1000 WORDS
OR
A lightly marked up manuscript ready for you to start your next revision. $5/1000 WORDS

Manuscript Assessment

Think you’re ready to move beyond the draft, but not quite sure? A Manuscript Assessment can help you save time and budget before starting a Developmental Edit.

I will read your manuscript and assess its strengths and room for improvement around its 5 major structural components: Plot, Main Character(s), Pace, Structure and Setting. This assessment will focus on the big picture, making sure you have the right foundations in place before starting a Developmental Edit. You have to know what the story is before you start working on how to tell it.

What to expect
A comprehensive report assessing all the major building blocks of your manuscript. $7/1000 WORDS

Developmental Edit (Content or Substantive Edit)

Ready for a deep dive? Let’s go!

A Developmental Edit aims to turn your draft into a manuscript ready for querying or self-publishing. I will start with a Manuscript Assessment and move on to do up to 3 rounds of marking up your manuscript, to show you exactly where your attention is needed.

You are encouraged to be an active participant in your Developmental Edit. If you have the time available, I will perform your Developmental Edit in 2 stages. Stage 1 is sending you the Manuscript Assessment for your approval, allowing you to make choices and decisions before I start marking up your manuscript. This helps make sure we both have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. Stage 2 is marking up your manuscript in line with the choices you made in Stage 1. The timeframe for this style of editing will be determined at booking, to make sure we both have ample time to give your manuscript the attention it deserves.

If you prefer to be less hands on, or have limited time available, I can skip Stage 1 and make your choices for you. In most cases I will pick whatever resolve is less time-consuming for you, but you are invited to instruct me here. You will still receive your full Manuscript Assessment with all your options available.

Please note: In both cases you will still have to carry out all your edits yourself, I do not ghost-edit.

What to expect
A comprehensive Manuscript Assessment and a fully marked up manuscript. FROM $10/1000 WORDS

The Final Check (Gamma Read)

A fresh pair of eyes? A quality control after your Developmental Edit?

Let’s face it, even with the best of plans laid, developmental edits are a messy business. Settings change, supporting characters leave, subplots disappear, whole scenes stop making sense. Who’s Tom? Why is it winter now? Where did the cat go? I will read through your manuscript in its (nearly) final form, and try to help you catch those last inconsistencies and smaller errors left over from previous edits. This service works best on manuscripts I have not already worked on, but this is not a requirement.

What to expect
A lightly marked up manuscript focused on easy fixes and highlighting outright errors. This will not include any developmental edits. $5/1000 WORDS

Query support / Submission Package Assessment

Ready to start querying? Congratulations! Feel like you’re out of your depth while creating your submission package? Completely normal.

Most authors struggle with their submission packages. Selling your novel is a very different skill than writing it, and the pressure can get to even the calmest and most confident of authors. I will work with you to make sure your submission package puts your manuscripts best foot forward, within the standards set by the EFA, CIEP and the greater publishing industry.

A submission package consists of your query letter, a synopsis, and the first 30 pages of your novel. If I have already worked with you on your novel in its current form you will probably not need me to go through that part again.

What to expect
A comprehensive assessment (format and content) of your query letter and synopsis. FLAT RATE $50
A comprehensive assessment (format and content) of your full submission package. FLAT RATE $100

Rejection-investigation

There is a seemingly endless number of reasons why a manuscript is rejected, and very few of them have anything to do with either your manuscript or you: The agent is simply not signing new authors right now, they have already signed an author too similar to yourself, or they are not looking for manuscripts in your genre or target audience at this time.

However, if you have been querying for over 6 months and had requests for full manuscripts that have then been rejected, something might be wrong. This could be as simple as inadvertently misrepresenting your manuscript in your query letter or synopsis, or bigger issues within the manuscript itself, like not delivering on genre expectations. I can assess your full manuscript with a focus on investigating possible reasons for the rejections, including measuring it against your submission package.

What to expect
A short report outlining my findings and suggestions on improvement. (This could include advice on further editorial services to consider, but you are under no obligation to order them from me.) $3/1000 WORDS

Post-Query Support

Signed with an agent? Congratulations! The real fun is about to begin!

Signing with an agent should be, and is, a joyous occasion, but after spending all this time with your manuscript all to yourself and as the sole decision-maker, it can also be a bit daunting. I can be your ally through the process and help you decipher and implement any notes from your agent and their team.

This service works best if I have already worked with you on one or more versions of your manuscript, but hey, I’m up for a challenge!

What to expect
Whatever you want! Service and price to be determined at booking.
